Scales is a publication with one main topic; dinosaurs. Not wanting to make just another boring informational pamphlet, I decided to add a twist – this particular series takes place in an alternate universe where dinosaurs are still alive and part of our every day lives. I did this because a) who doesn’t love reading / learning about dinosaurs? and b) it combines both the imaginary and the factual to make something thats different, interesting, and fun to read. I based the feature articles on real news stories, as well as made up a few of my own. All of my research was conducted at about.com. There, I found information on types of dinosaurs, dinosaur behaviour, and more. I chose to get all of my dinosaur content from one source because then it would be consistent information. I chose to feature dinosaurs that aren’t that well known opposed to dinosaurs like T. Rex or Vilociraptor, although those are mentioned in the series, in order to make the publications more interesting to read. The articles that I based the articles in Scales on are each based on a similar modern situation; for example, the article about the Nanuqsaurus attack is based on an article about a grizzly bear attack. The ornithopid article is based on an article about bison, and the Bambiraptor section is paraphrased from an article about raccoons.
